2008 Paddlin' for Paws Trip Photos

Click on the numbers beneath each day to see trip photos, which are presented chronologically. The descriptions below provide some information and context for the photos.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13
1: Lynda heads north shortly after embarking from Sand Harbor, Nevada. Smooth waters so far.
2: Gary Scott, Owner of Action Watersports of Incline Village, Nevada, hands Lynda the first unsolicited donation of the trip at the beach in front of the Hyatt in Incline Village.
3: Lynda and Mo have an awesome breakfast buffet at the Sierra Café at the Hyatt in Incline Village, Nevada.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 14
1: Mo and Lynda portage Mo’s kayak to embark on Day 2 at Kings Beach, California.
2: Trish McGraw, Mo, and Lynda have a snack on a north shore lakefront patio. Trish had hit the water looking for Lynda and Mo, found them, and paddled a good portion of this day’s leg with them. After being unable to identify the intended lunch spot from the water and thus paddling some distance past it, the three paddlers were invited by a kind stranger named Lin to use her patio for a snack break.
3: Lynda and Mo’s kayaks sit along Lake Forest Beach, California, during a break for a quick swim in chilly waters with Trish before she returned home.
4: A four-legged friend checks in with Lynda and Mo on behalf of Reno-Tahoe animals about how much money they’ve raised so far (Lake Forest Beach, California).
5: Mo and Lynda (Mo in background) arrive at Tahoe State Recreation Area, California, where they camp for the night.
6: Nothing soothes sore muscles like a little ice cream (Lynda and Mo in Tahoe City, California).
7: Paddlin’ for Paws poster dog Ike poses (rather, sleeps) at Tahoe City Kayak (California).
8: Despite an arm injury and impending surgery, paddle pal Jamie Little makes a nice meal for Lynda and Mo at their campsite in Tahoe City, California.
9: Lynda and Mo have the good fortune of sharing a campground with Hillary Humphreys and Candace Cable of Turning Point Tahoe as Hillary and Candace prepare to embark on their own circumnavigation of the lake as a fundraiser for individuals with disabilities.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 15
1: During a break en route to Meeks Bay, Lynda consults the Lake Tahoe Water Trail map to be sure she and Mo are going the right way. (Not really—she and Mo are map freaks who like to check out the upcoming shoreline.)
2: Mo departs from lunch stop Chambers Landing, where Lynda and Mo have an unhealthy but tasty cheeseburger, Cheetos, and soft drink meal.
3: Mo rounds a rocky section to head into Meeks Bay, California.
4: Lynda and Mo (taking photo) play a game of chicken foot with paddle pals Dana Burnett, Jessica McDonald, and Terri Bostick at their Meeks Bay campground (California).

SATURDAY, AUGUST 16
1: Paddle pals Jessica McDonald and Terri Bostick (front) and Lynda (back) kayak by Rubicon Point en route to Emerald Bay (California), deemed Lake Tahoe’s most scenic spot.
2: Lynda and paddle pals Terri Bostick and Jessica McDonald relax by the Paddlin’ for Paws flag (t-shirt) raised to claim this nice little snack spot.
3: A paddlewheeler enters Emerald Bay, California (view from the Rubicon Trail where Lynda and Mo hiked to tour Vikingsholm Castle).
4: Lake Tahoe Water Trail members Lisa Shapiro and Bill Bloomer join Mo and Lynda in the old teahouse atop Fannette Island during a full moon paddle on Emerald Bay, California (photo by LTWT member Dennis Liebl, who helped organize and participated in the excursion).

SUNDAY, AUGUST 17
1: Lynda and Mo paddle in to The Beacon Bar & Grill at Camp Richardson, California, on the south shore of Lake Tahoe.
2: Liz Maul, Outreach and Education Manager, and Dawn Armstrong, Executive Director, of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and S.P.C.A. in South Lake Tahoe (California) join Mo and Lynda for brunch at The Beacon Bar & Grill at Camp Richardson, California.
3: Mo races the paddlewheeler Tahoe Queen as it departs from Ski Run Marina in South Lake Tahoe, California. (Actually, she was trying to not get hit.) The worst weather of the trip was just beginning.

MONDAY, AUGUST 18
1: Mo stands on the porch of the Zephyr Cove Resort cabin kindly donated for this night by Accommodations Manager Victor Gomez. (Paddle pal Celia Ranson brought Lynda’s car that day to pick up Lynda and Mo at Cave Rock, Nevada, and assist in other ways during the last two days.)
2: Bartender Bart at Zephyr Cove’s Sunset Bar piles high the whipped cream on Mo’s hot chocolate with Bailey’s Irish Cream.
3: Lynda relaxes at the Sunset Bar at Zephyr Cove, Nevada. She and Mo watch the sun set while sipping a cup of hot chocolate with Bailey’s Irish Cream on this chilly night before the most difficult leg of the journey.
4: The sun goes down at Zephyr Cove, Nevada. (Okay, so the sun doesn’t really go down, but rather the earth rotates and all that jazz.)

TUESDAY, AUGUST 19
1: During a break, Lynda tries to call out for a towboat on this hardest day, but no such luck. (Actually, she retrieves a message from South Lake Tahoe’s KOWL-AM / KRLT-FM Radio News Director David Alan, who kindly warns Lynda and Mo of impending bad weather and wishes them safe travels.) Mo took many photos of Lynda on the cell phone on and off the water to capture her frequent cell phone use as the trip’s contact person.
2: Mo paddles in front of historic Thunderbird Lodge, approximately two miles south of the trip’s final destination, Sand Harbor, Nevada.
3: Lynda navigates rough waters on Lake Tahoe’s east shore.
4: Mo tries to stay afloat as a wave bears down on her.
5: Mo and Lynda come down the home stretch into Sand Harbor at 10:15 a.m., well ahead of schedule (motivated by fear).
6: Lynda and Mo enthusiastically raise paddles as they come ashore at Sand Harbor.
7: Lynda and Mo do a high five to celebrate completing their 72-mile circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe.
8: Mo and Lynda give another high five by Lynda’s car with both kayaks secured on top for the return trip to Reno.
9: Paddle pal Celia Ranson, who assisted the paddlin’ pair during the final two days of the trip, joins Lynda and Mo for a celebratory drink at the Harbor House at Sand Harbor (just before the three were indirectly responsible for setting one of those nice green umbrellas on fire by asking for their heat lamp to be turned on to warm them up…).
